BLOG 1: I GOT FIRED…

Well, my wife corrected me this morning. I was technically laid off. There’s a part of me that wants to sit here and rip my former employers, blah, blah, blah…but I’m not going to do that. One, I don’t think I legally can and two, they really did take care of me on the way out. So many stories of people being shoved out of a plane with no parachute, but not here. Now, to be fair, I AM unemployed. I’ve been collecting unemployment, which, contrary to popular belief, is not a hand out. I paid into that system for a very long time for just such an emergency. We are making due with what we have, I am on my wife’s insurance, so that very large COBRA expense from my former employer is not necessary. Hers is very reasonably priced and the coverage is not the worst. The bills are getting paid. We just had to cut back on a few things, that’s all. And it sure helps that both of us drive hybrid cars given the current state of affairs.

The job hunt is somewhat frustrating, but, considering I really haven’t had to search for a job for 26 years, I’m not really sure what to expect. I haven’t applied to a ton of jobs just yet. The first 2-3 weeks after I got let go, I was just kind of numb. Once I got the first unemployment check and I knew that we would be OK, that’s when I kind of started the search in earnest. I’ve applied to about 10 so far, with 2 rejections and nothing from the rest. Some have been recent, but one has been awhile. I check my “status” on their portal and it’s still open, so…I dunno. I would love to find a gig here in town (or close), but I am expanding my “radius”. I won’t say where, but it’s somewhere that my wife and I have talked at length about ending up. I’ve only applied to 3 gigs there, the rest have been in and around here.

And as for a possible gig, I have set myself some really strong wants. Mainly, it’s what everyone else has: Monday thru Friday, 9-5, no nights, no weekends. I’ve worked nights and weekends for the better part of 26 years and I’m kind of done with it.

So, why the website now? Well, if I’m 100% honest and transparent…I’m bored. I’m very much a type-A guy. Sitting around doing nothing is not my strong suit. And I also am hoping this will help me vent/stay sane and keep myself in check. What can you expect from the site? Well, like the front page says…I’m gonna blog, hopefully daily or every other day. I’ve always wanted to do a rasslin podcast and I’m not exactly booked up right now, so I think I’m going to start that and/or a YouTube channel (hence the vlogs mention on the front page). But, for now, you’ll get them blogs.

Stay safe, peeps, and we’ll see you on the next one!
